Builder. Grade. Mirrors. Literally sucking the style out of our bathrooms with their plainness. Measure and Cut

You will need to measure the length and width of your mirror to begin. After you have the mirror dimensions, measure and cut your 1×4 boards. Use the picture above as a guide figuring the frame measurements. To keep the edge of the mirror from showing along the edge of the frame, I added 1/8th of an inch to all of my measurement.

Really the only tricky part of finding the dimensions for the frame is the width. Because the “width” boards are in between the length boards, we will need to account for the thicknesses of our “length” boards (3/4in each or 1.5 in).

So for my mirror, at 24 inches wide, my “width” boards were 22 5/8 inches (24-1.5+1/8).

Stain and Assemble

Using Varathane’s Golden Oak, I stained my frame. I chose to assemble the frame before staining. I simply screwed my boards together with the intention of filling the holes with wood putty. However, in my rush to have a fabulous mirror, I ended up skipping the hole filling step.

Any method of putting the frame together is great. If nails and glue are your jam, then go for it. If you have millions of hours in your life, whip out the Kregg Jig and make it a bit schnazier.

Another important note, my hope is that this will be the first and last mirror selfie that I will ever have to post.

Glue ‘Er Up

This is the step where it would save you some heartache to grab a helper. Like one who can hold still, not your five year old.

Apply a liberal amount of E6000 to the back of your frame and stick it onto your mirror. It helps to have a tissue handy to wipe any over ooze of glue up before it dries.

While your helper holds the mirror steady, attach your L brackets to the top of your mirror and the wall. I added this step for extra strength just in case my glue failed, and it helps keep the mirror in place while the glue dries.

A few books or pieces of scrap wood stacked under the mirror while the glue dries, can help too.

Decorate

The reason I was drawn to this DIY bathroom mirror makeover, was the added storage it creates.
