Dollar Store Fall Decor | DIY

Slowly but surely I’m finding time to bring out the Fall decor. Fall is my all time favorite season, and I’m ready for that cooler weather so I can break out the cozy sweaters. When I’m planning my Fall decor, I pretty much like to keep it simple and inexpensive. The Dollar Store is not short on Fall decor, but it’s just got that cheapo vibe that doesn’t strike my fancy. This Fall, I’ll be sharing a lot of DIY Dollar Store Fall decor ideas, and sharing how to give dollar decor a more minimal farmhouse look.

$1 Frame Art

For today’s Dollar Store Fall decor project, I picked up a few frames. We will be using the frames to display some or our favorite leaves. I happened to have a thrifted wooden frame that I love, so I picked up a frame from the Dollar Store of the same size, so I would have a second piece of glass.

Remove all of the backing and glass from the frames. For this DIY Dollar Store Fall decor project, we’ll only need one frame of each size, and two pieces of glass. Basically, for each size, you are buying one frame just for the glass piece, but they only cost a dollar so I’m not crying about it.

With the glass removed, paint one frame from each side with some chalk paint. I chose white, because I wanted these decor pieces to be all about the pressed leaves, and didn’t want too much contrast. You can skip this step though if you like the frames as they are.

Iron Pressed Leaves

While your painted frames dry, collect some of your favorite leaves. We just walked around the yard and grabbed some nice perfect leaves. It’s good to have more than you think you need just in case there are any oopsies along the way.

Once you’re happy with your leaf collection, grab a couple pieces of paper and an iron and start pressing.

Sandwich the leaves between two pieces of paper, and start ironing. Keep the iron moving. I also like to iron for a few seconds, flip the leaf, and iron for a few seconds longer. It shouldn’t take more than a minute to achieve the perfect pressed leaf. If you find that your leaves are turning a bit brown, you are ironing for too long.

When the leaves are ready, they should feel very papery, but hold most of their color. I absolutely love the natural element that using these pressed leaves brings to this Dollar Store Fall decor project.

Frame Your Leaves

Set one piece of glass into the frame, and arrange the pressed leaves however suites your fancy.

When you’re happy with you leaf arrangement, lay the second piece of glass on top. Push the pins down to secure the glass, but be careful not to be too aggressive, or you will crack the glass. If you have a leaf with a thicker stem in you arrangement, you may have to add a dot of glue to some of the smaller leaves to keep them in place.

After the glass is secure, this Dollar Store Decor Fall decor project is complete. If you don’t have a shelf to display the frames on, you can hang them by adding some thin chain with hot glue to the back of the frames.

Certainly, this DIY Dollar Store Fall decor project doesn’t have to be only for Fall. Pressed leaf and flower art is beautiful all year long. I just love how the framed leaves give a natural and subtle nod to Fall.
