The other night I was preparing for bed when visions of a tiny ladder plant stand popped into my head. Why my brain chose to think up a tiny ladder plant stand at 10 PM I will never know, but I tossed and turned all night waiting for the sun to come up so I could turn this idea into reality.
Upon waking it became quickly apparent that my son had the flu, and tiny ladder plant stand dreams had to be set aside for later. I jumped on the project as soon as my husband got home from work. He is so patient and gracious with me and my DIY nonsense.
Tiny ladder plant stand took me about an hour to completely assemble. I chose not to paint or stain tiny ladder plant stand because I made him with reclaimed lumber and I just loved the way he looked after being sanded. Right into my kitchen he moved, the place I had envisioned him all along.
With mounds of scrap lumber around my DIY’ers den, I was able to put tiny ladder plant stand together for free.

Cuts For Tiny Ladder Plant Stand
The legs for tiny ladder plant stand are 1×2 lumber cut to 18 inches each. Sand all four legs before assembly. Wildly important, yet un-pictured are the rungs. Cut four rungs at 5 1/2 inches long and sand each board before assembly as well.
Cut and sand your shelf 1×6 boards next. I cut my lower shelf to 17 inches and my top shelf to 14 inches. The top 1×4 piece for tiny ladder plant stand is cut to 10 inches.
Assembly
The ladder legs I created by cutting off the top corner from each 18 inch 1×2. Taking one leg, I eyeballed the angle I thought I would want. I knew I needed a sharp angle to keep tiny ladder plant stand from being too wide. Get the same angle on all of the legs by using the first cut leg as a template.
I used a nail gun to attach my legs at the top, but if you don’t have a nail gun, finish nails should work. If using a hammer, I would recommend first drilling holes to drive the nails into.
After I assembled tiny ladder plant stands legs, I cut off the top 1/8 inch of each set to create a flat top. When placing your nails, keep this step in mind so you don’t cut your nails off.
To attach the rungs for tiny ladder plant stand, I measured two inches from the bottom of each leg. Line the rung up with your marks and nail the leg to the rung. For the top rungs, I repeated this same step only I measured down four inches from the top of the legs.
Once your rungs are secured, attach the 10 inch 1×4 to the top, nailing into the legs. Center the 1×4 on top of the legs and nail into them.
Tiny Ladder Plant Stand Shelves
The 1×6 shelf boards can now be slid into place. The 17 inch 1×6 is for the bottom and the 14 incher for the top. Actual dimensions of a 1×6 are 3/4″ x 5 1/2″. The shelves should fit snugly through the ladder and rest on the rungs. Tap the boards gently into place with a hammer if they are tight.
I left some wiggle room for my shelves and cut my rungs 5 3/4 inches, as you may notice in my photos. Because I was trimming larger boards down to 1×6 by hand, I thought this wiggle room was necessary, however, if I had actual 1×6 lumber I wouldn’t have done this.
Shelves should be nailed to the legs so that they don’t tip when you put a plant on the end of them.
Finished Product
I love it when projects are so easy. Tiny ladder plant stand is everything I imagined he would be and has been a great addition to my kitchen counter.
Other possible uses for this tiny ladder DIY that came to mind are as a cupcake stand or farmhouse table centerpiece. Enjoy!
